Kara - "Too much blood, too many deaths in our streets, too many tears and cries fill our rivers, too many dramas in the heart of the history of the African continent": this is the comment that Father Donald Zagore, theologian of the Society for the African missions, released to Agenzia Fides talking about the increasingly dramatic situations and events affecting the great black continent. "Africa has the sad reputation of being a vast open-air cemetery. After the recent plane crash of Ethiopian Airlines, with 157 deaths, three countries in southern Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, were hit by Cyclone Idai which caused thousands of deaths. In Mali, for the year 2018, the United Nations reported 500 civilians killed and in the village of Ogossagou, about 160 people were massacred. These are just some of the many tragedies - continues the missionary - to which are added the massacres of Beni, northern Kivu in Congo Kinshasa, which can almost be considered a genocide, massacres in Nigeria, Cameroon ... They are frightening and shocking situations and figures".
"When will Africa stop crying its dead to really work to rebuild the country'" He asks.
"Cradle of humanity, today our continent must draw the necessary lessons from its painful history, it must work resolutely to heal wounds and overcome traumas. We must definitively encourage its transition from a torn and battered Africa of yesterday to the reconciled Africa of tomorrow", insists Fr. Zagore.
"The challenges in Africa are enormous", emphasizes the missionary. "We must work to build, respecting freedoms and people, states of law and justice that categorically reject the language of violence and impunity as a means of expression and governance. Today Africa needs to reinvent a mentality. A true revolution of conscience is necessary through the light of the Gospel nourished by the values of love, charity and peace".
